Mr. Sneeze

When did you start SNEEZE mag?
Spring 2008.

What was the original concept behind the mag on inception?
Fast, fun, high-impact, less is more, poster-size, and something for everyone.
Has this concept changed over time since you began?
Nope. It's stayed pretty true.
You ran your own blog SOYOURSTYLE, are an established photographer [having done campaigns for Stüssy,Nike, Burton], contributed to BEINGHUNTED and COMPLEX early on. Was it always in your head to want to start a publication?
In high school I was always in the computer lab because it had a scanner. So I'd endlessly scan photos that I took of the skate crew. And then using the scans and like Photoshop 2.0, make these webzines that I'd upload on a dial-up connection to Geocities for them to check out. Each update would specifically feature someone in the crew which was funny because there was always some suspense as to who would get "the cover" ha. And then in university, I was photo editor at the school's newspaper and got pretty into it. And after that, I interned/worked at a mag in New York. So I've always been into publications in some shape or form. Photography was always kinda on the side.

From what I've read, you have a very disciplined work ethic. Do you still only have the 30ft work table in your studio apartment?
That desk set-up is long gone. I've still got large desks going, just not as intense as that was. I need a good desk because I hardly ever leave it.

I noticed on your website, the "stockist" page just says "figure it out yourself…". Is that a reaction to the way youth interact with culture today?
Ha, no. I was just tired of having to update that page. And there's not enough space to list all the stockists and I don't want to add scrollbars and clunk up the website. Also, lots of shops kept emailing about why they weren't listed, which got annoying. But yeah, kids these days…

Since the mag started, the cultural landscape has changed a lot, thanks to the internet getting rid of geographical boundaries. Do you find social media affecting the way you approach the magazine?
Not really. Sometimes Insta can help make it easier to get content or avoid having to go through someone to get to someone… Send a DM to an artist whose work looks cool or a skater I want to get. Insta has ruined getting big name models in the mag, but oh well. I'm not on Twitter or anything else. Insta is hard enough for me to keep updated at the end of each day.

Do you have a favourite item of clothing you own?
I'm pretty pleased with my Dior pant collection.

What piece of clothing/design do you think is a timeless classic?
Anything by Shawn Stüssy from his Stüssy days.
